Current Focus - Early Childhood Development
Unisco (2008:n.p.) stated that education for sustainable development must start in early childhood. It is during this period that children develop their basic values, attitudes, skills, behaviours and habits, which may be long lasting. Studies have shown that racial stereotypes are learned early and that young children are able to pick up cultural messages about wealth and inequality. As early childhood education is about laying a sound intellectual, psychological, emotional, social and physical foundation for development and lifelong learning, it has an enormous potential in fostering values, attitudes, skills and behaviours that support sustainable development - e.g. wise use of resources, cultural diversity,
gender equality and democracy.
Carol Abrey's study (2017:n.p.) Sources of inequality in South African early child development services confirms that those most in need and most deserving of high-quality ECD facilities, were reported to have the most difficulty in accessing the resources. Typically the South African demographics indicated that these needed communities are Rutral and Township based.
South Africa's developmental challenges remain a cause of major concern to many. Our inconsistent history over the past 25 years have understandable done little to inspire confidence. However, in the midst of all the negativity; to do nothing is also not a responsible response.
The chaos in our education sector, with the lack of focus and funding continues to produce ineffective results for many South African children who live in Rural and Township communities. At the same time it is also no a good reflection on the many dedicated people working tirelessly to mitigate these negative results.
Therefore Ikam Valethu mobilises the resources within the ECD Community and welcome all stakeholders to partner with us in achieving our vision of sustainable livelihoods for children and youth. Kindly contact us info@ikamvalethu.org should you wish to invest resources with us.
